Summer 9.20.14

Steer the Shopping Cart

And no I'm not talking about buying horses... well, at least for the moment. Over the past week, the barn has been busy with visitors. Gene LaCroix came out to the farm for two days to help prepare the horses for US Nationals. We had a great few days and the horses were working awesome afterwards. All you have to do is watch the video we took of Jamie Costanzo's horse Stonewoods 'N Cook SF on facebook  to see how ready we are!

After Gene's visit, we were thrilled to host Gayle Lampe, another horse industry icon, on a barn tour as a part of her clinic at J. Bennett Farms at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank. Gayle helped a number of our riders hone their A game before US Nationals. We welcomed Sherry Morrow, Jennifer Granger, and Carla Jo Bailey also visiting our barn. Beth Jupp, Nancy O'Reilly, Roxy Shelgren, Jamie Costanzo and Emily Holden did us proud in their lessons with Gayle. Gayle's knowledge is immense and her enthusiasm is truly infectious.
In between Gayle's visit, Sabine Schut-Kery, a dressage trainer and long time friend, came to help us school our horses and riders for the show hack division. Sabine had a great analogy for working on straightness, that riding a horse is like steering a shopping cart. Without a rider's correction, a horse will naturally drift in one direction just like those metal shopping carts.

With all of the excitement of preparing for US Nationals it is easy to get caught up and keep training in one direction. By having excellent mentors and friends, we're able to stay focused and keep the shopping carts with the stickiest of wheels on track.

10th Annual Day of the Horse in Thousand Oaks

On September 13th, with temperatures soaring past the 100s we showcased our Lowe Show Horses at Conejo Creek Equestrian Park in Thousand Oaks, CA. It was a great honor to represent the Arabian breed to others who may not get to witness the beauty and athleticism of a breed of horse we cherish so much. Special thanks to Prince LOA, Prince James SF and Penelope Krewse for being such excellent ambassadors.

Outside of the Barn

Our Lowe Rider Nicole Krueger is busy in her role as President of CareRescue LA. Recently, a number of Lowe Riders banded together to rescue Dixie, a dog with a bullet wound found in a dumpster. Dixie is now in a loving home with Lowe Rider Melanie Ronen's aunt. To follow Nicole and help save more of our furry friends - find her on facebook at Nicole CareRescue LA.

Summer 8.31.14

Got motion?

After watching Saddlebred World Championships in Louisville, KY, with my wife Shawn, there is a lot to compare and contrast between the Saddlebred and Arabian horse show worlds. As an Arabian trainer, I love to watch such an action packed show. First of all, there are tons of people in the stands because the Saddlebred show is held in conjunction with the Kentucky State Fair. In Arabians, we only experience comparable attendance when we show at Scottsdale, but let's not forget Scottsdale typically has a gate attendance of 200,000 to 250,000 and that is nothing to complain about.

Secondly, in Louisville the classes tend to run much faster so that people don't leave the stands from one class to the next. The classes run for about ten minutes and the ribbons also take place a lot quicker. This year at Canadian Nationals we had nearly an extra hour between class sessions because the show commission decided not to hold group photos in the ring. This too meant that people were staying closer to the ring to make sure they didn't miss a class.

Thirdly, given the nature of the Saddlebred as primarily a Saddle Seat riding horse, the horses are allowed to really show off their motion and talents. With shorter classes these high energy horses are able to put their best on display without getting tired and flat. In Arabians, for many reasons, we often place manners over performance which gives some bigger moving horses fewer opportunities to shine. At the same time, I love the versatility that our Arabians show by competing in divisions like Show Hack and Park. We have one horse in our barn right now that does this - Halstead's Deven+// owned by the Paulsen family.

Lastly, the faster class schedule doesn't lose a beat by mixing in retirement and hall of fame ceremonies that celebrate the Saddlebred tradition and community. This is one thing that I do wish we did more of in Arabians, as there are many unsung heroes that deserve more recognition in our breed. Nonetheless it is pretty awesome to see great achievements by Arabian horse trainers like Jimmy Stachowski who won the Saddlebred World's Championship in Driving impressively and Brian Chappell who used to train Arabians do so well in the Saddlebred show ring.

70th Annual Arabian Horse Association of Southern California Fall Show

We took 6 horses to the beautiful Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara. Deanna and Victor helped keep the horses and riders prepped. At this stage of the season its worth recognizing how much they do to keep the clocks running on time! Our gratitude also goes out to Lowe Riders Roxy Shelgren, Shelby Scanlan, and Susan Bossler for their help and support at the show. Overall we had a great show with a wonderful group of people, and while the ribbons are important reasons to celebrate so are good clean rides and partnerships between our Lowe show horses and riders.
